Kinma has been delivering progressive education driven by passionate teachers, parents, and dedicated staff since 1972.
An Alternative Education Since the 1970's
Kinma was founded by local families wanting an alternative style of education, where children’s curiosity and creativity were encouraged through collaboration and discovery.
In 1971 a notice at local shops invited families to gather at the Webster’s house and consider how to start a school that would inspire a love of learning. The name Kinma came from an Aboriginal word meaning “awake”.
Kinma's Story
Kinma started at a hall in Forestville with a set up and pack up each day arrangement, then at a house in Perentie Road, Belrose. A parent originally held a 99-year lease on the Terrey Hills property for a plant nursery. The lease was transferred to Kinma, who later purchased the land when it became available.
The school was founded on Progressive Education Principles, with its Core and Guiding Principles shaping both the curriculum and values to support thriving, successful learners. Central to this vision was the belief that the environment profoundly influences holistic learning, as Pam Webster says “set up the right environment and children will learn.” Equally important was a strong commitment to building meaningful connections with each child, their family, and the wider community, recognising that relationships are essential to wellbeing and growth.
The 'Kinma Town' Project
Kinma kids from the 1970’s will remember the ‘Kinma Town’ project where they helped design the models and then build the buildings with parent involvement. There were shops, Post Office, Town Hall, Sing Passage and a General Track. This type of whole school involvement saw life skills and engaged learning be celebrated.
Kinma Celebrated 50 Years!
In 2022, Kinma celebrated its 50th anniversary with a joyful gathering of past and present students, families, and staff. The day began with a smoking ceremony to welcome everyone to Country, followed by heartfelt speeches from people who had been part of Kinma’s journey over the decades. Stories were shared, memories rekindled, and connections renewed across generations.
The celebration was filled with activities for all ages, delicious nourishing food, and plenty of laughter. Guests explored the photo collation of Kinma across the decades, recognising themselves and friends from years ago and drawing similarities and differences to now whilst reflecting on Kinma’s rich history. It was a day that honoured our past, celebrated our community, and embraced the spirit that continues to guide Kinma today.
