Keynote Speaker – Dr Nikki Brunker: Democracy, Education, and Democratic Schooling in Anti–Democratic Times

With democracy under threat globally, western nations have taken a conservative turn. Australia’s political conservatism has enabled schooling to be narrowed to the point of it being anti-educational. Children and young people, with their families, are enacting democracy in abandonment of mainstream schooling. Democratic schools hold an important position in modelling the possibilities for the relationship between democracy and education. In this presentation Nikki will contemplate how democratic schools may be beacons within this darkness.

Dr Nikki Brunker

Dr Nikki Brunker is a senior lecturer in the Sydney School of Education and Social Work at The University of Sydney. Nikki brings extensive experience working with children, young people, teachers, parents/carers, school leaders, and educational organisations as a primary and secondary classroom teacher and principal, researcher, and mentor. Nikki’s research explores school experience, alternative paths of education, and critical pedagogy in schooling and initial teacher education for transformative practice. Nikki’s work has recently focussed on ‘evidence–based practice’ in response to frustrations witnessed amongst school leaders, teachers, and pre–service teachers, in which she is currently engaged in case studies of teachers’ ‘enriched–evidence–based practice’, while also exploring means for developing pre–service teacher use of evidence amidst significant challenges to their opportunities beyond implementation.
